Enshrining Buddhist memorial tablets for generations of shoguns as was Tokugawa Ieyasu's will

In the year 1475, the fourth generation of the Matsudaira clan, Matsudaira Chikatada, built this temple as a family temple for fallen Matsudaira soldiers and Tokugawa Shoguns.
It is known for important cultural properties like its two-story pagoda—one of the Tokai region's most beautiful—and screen doors illustrated by famous artist Reizei Tamechika as well as eight generations of Matsudaira graves; a wooden statue of Tokugawa Ieyasu, who originally comes from the Matsudaira line; and life-sized Buddhist memorial tablets for Tokugawa shoguns.

The temple buildings were purposely placed so that looking south through several gates, you can see an uninterrupted view of Okazaki Castle, where Tokugawa Ieyasu was born—portraying the deep tie Ieyasu had with Daijuji Temple. The straight, nearly three-kilometer line between Okazaki Castle and Daijuji Temple is locally known as the "Vista Line" and renowned for its beauty.
