Kariya-City The Kariya-born “Snow Lord” Doi Toshitsura - Rotating Exhibit at KARIYA City Museum of History

Date : 10/05/2024 - 11/17/2024

  • KARIYA City Museum of History - The Kariya-born “Snow Lord” Doi Toshitsura

Doi Toshitsura was born as the fourth son of Doi Toshinari, lord of Kariya Domain, and was adopted into his family's conclave, the Koga Clan of Shimousa Province (present-day Koga City, Ibaraki Prefecture). After succeeding as lord, he served as the governor of Osaka Castle and as a senior councilor, and was instrumental in suppressing the Oshio Heihachiro Rebellion and carrying out the Tenpo Reforms. He also continued to observe snow crystals with his elder retainer Takami Senseki, compiling the results of his observations in "Sekka Zusetsu (Snow Crystal Illustrations)." The crystalline shapes featured in the codex were later used as reference for the design of ukiyo-e prints, garments, and other popular purposes. This exhibition introduces the personality of Toshitsura, known as the "Snow Lord."
