Nagoya-City Monet: I Can See the Lights—An Immersive Journey exhibition

Date : 04/09/2025 - 06/22/2025

Digital art exploring the scenes as Monet, the Artist of Light, saw them in Nagoya

Explore the scenes experienced by the artist of Light, Monet, through interactive digital art. The Monet: I Can See the Lights—An Immersive Journey exhibition is on display at the Kanayama Minami Building, Art Museum Wing as it was at the Kadokawa Culture Museum in Saitama Prefecture.

Claude Monet (1840–1926) was born in Paris, France and became the posterchild of the impressionist art movement. He painted ever-changing scenes and moments with soft hues on canvas during his lifetime, leaving countless masterpieces to the world of fine arts. Monet had a love for nature and used delicate brush strokes to illustrate light in pieces as he strived to, as he put it, paint just as a bird sings its songs.
This exhibition traces the locations Monet visited and the sights he saw as it uses music to bring back the friends and family he spent time with while also reliving the life he spent in his final years in Giverny. Take a journey through his imagery, starting with Impression, Sunrise, shown in a group impressionism exhibit in 1874 after he left his salon with friends in the latter 19th century in search of a place to show his artistic visions. The term "impressionism" is said to have started when critics dubbed the piece in harsh ridicule.
The exhibition also serves to explore how Monet lived in a 19th-century France as impressionism was taking its first steps and what kind of scenes met the artist's eyes. Feel for yourself how Monet must have as he experienced a world of light inspiring the numerous masterpieces he created.

In addition to Monet's paintings, an area educating all on Monet and a Monet-esque photogenic spot are available. In the educational area, you can learn about shifts in impressionism; the themes Monet used in his paintings; the methods he used in his series; and Japonisme, which was influenced by the artist. The photogenic spot brings to life Giverny's Water Lilies. Venture into the worlds Monet brushed to life as you gaze upon his pieces.

Note:
• Pictures show the exhibition as it was held at the Kadokawa Culture Museum.
