Stroll along the Historic Okada Townscape—the origin of Chita cotton

The former village of Okada in what is now Chita City once prospered in the cotton weaving industry by farmers as a means of extra income—so much so that it became the center for Chita cotton from the Edo period until the mid 1970s. In 1929, a new road was lain with cotton factories, retailers, and even a theater during the peak of the area's prosperity with what is estimated as some 3,000 female workers clocking in and out at the local factories. Even today, the townscape retains the accents of those years, offering visitors a nostalgic walk back in time.

• Chita Cotton Warehouse: Home to handweaving
This warehouse is said to have been built by cotton tycoon Torao Takeuchi in the late Meiji period, and is now a tangible folk property. Visitors can try their hand at hand looms and shop at the retail corner.

• Chita Okada Simple Post Office
The Chita Okada Simple Post Office was first built in 1902 as Okada's Post and Telegram Station. It closed down for a period, but made a resurgence in 1993 as a simple post office. Today, it is designated a tangible cultural property and acts as a main stop along and preservation advocate of the townscape.
