Set Your Mind On Seto, Japan’s Pottery & Ceramics Center

One thousand years of pottery, stoneware and ceramics history and culture is celebrated at the Seto-Gura Museum in one of the two major kiln areas of Aichi, Seto City. Pottery and chinaware from Seto became so famous that even now, all kiln fired items and ceramics are known as "Seto-yaki" ("Fired in Seto"), or "Seto-mono" ("Seto Goods"). Such was the artistic quality of Seto-ware, it is displayed in the Smithsonian and other museums and galleries around the world.

Seto-Gura Museum

Even today, Seto remains a center of pottery production, with many pottery studios and creative, skilled artisans producing both traditional styled glazed and fired pieces, alongside new and innovative works too. The Seto River running through the center of the town is lined with stimulating craft shops selling their beautiful and functional wares.

The first floor of the Seto-Gura Museum features the Seto ZAO Ceramic Plaza, offering retail prices on a wide range of fine pottery and ceramics. The 3rd floor display area, over 30 meters in length provides a view of the quality and range of the local wares that were long patronized by the ruling samurai class, as well as the affluent merchant classes.

The extensive museum’s second floor houses a nostalgic reproduction of the original Owari Seto train station and parts of the old town, including old shops, houses, kilns, and more. Train fans and children can enjoy boarding the old Seto Line train and sitting in the driver’s seat. The reproduced town takes you back to Seto’s vibrant 20th century heyday. The Seto-Gura Museum features meeting room facilities and even offers hands on creative experiences in the pottery workshop areas.

Set your mind on Seto, the pottery and ceramics center of Japan.
