Beginners welcome! A Gujo-Odori Dance Festival at Endoji Shopping Street, Downtown Nagoya!

Where the Dance-Maniacs of Nagoya Gather!
Using the Endoji Honmachi Shotengai Shopping Arcades (Endoji Shopping Street) as stage, a veritable crowd of dance fans turn the place into a festive mood by dancing the famous Gujo-Odori! The ten songs of this traditional dance are easy to learn, and during the training time prior to the main event, beginners get to rehearse with the more experienced participants. After that at 6:00 PM, the main dance starts and the great circle of people go dancing and slowly turning around the Yagura center tower, with an indescribable feeling of unity and belonging. The sound of the music with the laughter and the Geta wooden clogs stomping rhythmically echo on the roof of the arcades filling the senses in exhilarating ways!

If you never heard about the original Gujo Odori Festival in Gifu Prefecture, it’s a major event that gathers tens of thousands of visitors during a whole month, and during that time, in the four nights of Obon, the dancing around the town’s streets go the whole night long! At the Endoji Gallery in Nagoya, "hayashi" band players from the city of Gujo, as well as the famous dance master Ken Kawai, will be present and making the experience as authentic as it can be, at the Enjoy Festival!

Specialists in dressing kimono and yukata will also be available at the event, offering the unique service of making sure the garments resist the dancing body movements without getting undone. Grab your yukata (don't have one? Try your Japanese friends to borrow or get tips on how to buy, or even rent one!) and head down there for a last summer-festival fun!
