A Famous Place for Its Enku Buddhas and Hydrangeas
The temple of Kinseizan Ongakuji is known for being home to 16 Buddha statues that were carved by the utterly famous Buddhist monk, sculptor and poet Enku (円空), and which are appointed by Konan City as Municipal Cultural Heritages (ticket purchase required to see the sculptures). But it is also sought-after during late spring to early summer for the beautiful hydrangea garden it boasts inside its premises. There are 1,200 bushes of the flower, distributed among 33 species. At the same time as the hydrangeas, the five sal trees (沙羅の木 Sarasu-no-ki - Shorea robusta) also put out buds, creating an impressive scene.
