The Street of Demons in Takahama-City

Famous for the ceramic roof tiles industry that propelled its economy, the city of Takahama holds the Oni-Michi Matsuri event every year (lit. Festival of the Demon Roof Tile Road). It takes place in the 4.5 kilometer-long stretch of road connecting the Takahama-Minato Station to The Kawara Museum of Roof Tiles. Listed as one of the 500 Most Scenic Streets in Japan, this street is full of buildings built by using countless varieties of roof tile demons, the Onigawara, giving the annual festival its name.

Oni-gawara, the pug-ugly roof tiles

Oni means demon in Japanese, but sometimes it may be used in reference to an ugly face, or just when someone is angry. From ancient times, it was believed that such repulsive faces in the roof would help ward off bad spirits attempting to haunt a house or shrine. That's the origin of the term onigawara (oni=demon, kawara=roof tile), one of the prized products of Takahama-City.
