Minamichita-Town Shinojima Island Daimyo Procession Festival (Jan 4 only)
Date : 01/04/2024
Held on Thu, Jan 4 only for 2024
The ritual of the Daimyo Procession is carried out in order to protect Ojinjiki-sama, the spirit of Hachiojisha Shrine, while it is moved to Shimmeisha Shrine and brought back on the following day. It is believed that the sight of Ojinjiki-sama will blind onlookers, so all the lights throughout the island are turned off as Ojinjiki-sama makes its way from Hachiojisha Shrine to Shimmeisha Shrine.
On the next day, after a shamanic dance at Shinojima Island Beach, a crowd of half-naked men get into a big brawl to touch Otanagi-sama, a group of sacred trees which take on the men's bad luck. Once the bad luck is passed onto Otanagi-sama, it is cast out to sea, dispelling with any evil spirits which may have inhabited the men.
