Nagoya Airport’s Air Museums & Shopping Complex

Development and production of Japan’s aeronautical and space industry has long been centered in the advanced manufacturing hub of Aichi Prefecture.

One of the world’s greatest propeller driven fighter aircraft, the formidable Mitsubishi Zero was built in Aichi, along with a number of other wartime aircraft. Many of Japan’s Self Defense Forces’ jet and turboprop aircraft including helicopters are built and maintained in Aichi, where the nation’s first 100% designed and built helicopter, the MH2000 was created. Module parts of the International Space Station, satellite launch rockets and other space hardware is also made in Aichi.

Much of this aeronautical and space industry is based around the former "Nagoya International Airport" officially renamed "Nagoya Airport" when Centrair Chubu International Airport commenced operations, and the many international and domestic flights were re-routed. These days, the airport, located just minutes north of Nagoya City remains an important hub for commuter and business flights, small aircraft, and importantly, Komaki Base.

The airport is located opposite the Japan Air Self-Defense Force's Komaki Base with which it shares the runway, and so a range of self-defense force jet fighters, helicopters, large C-130 troop carrier aircraft along with civilian aircraft and more can be seen taking off and touching down from the wide viewing decks atop the former international terminal buildings. The old terminals have been remodeled and revitalized, becoming the "Airport Walk Nagoya" an extensive shopping mall featuring a wide range of specialist shops, restaurants and even a movie theater.

Air Museums

Nearby are the popular Aichi Museum of Flight and the MRJ MUSEUM. The Aichi Museum of Flight features displays of retired civil and military prop planes, jets and helicopters, and a range of entertaining and educational aeronautical attractions including flight simulators. Another popular attraction is the MRJ MUSEUM, dedicated to the technical development and manufacturing of the exciting Mitsubishi regional SpaceJet aircraft program, Japan’s first commercial jet airliner project.
