Toyota-City Korankei Gorge
Aichi's go-to gorge for autumn colors
as well as year-round botanical beauty
Korankei Gorge is full of color every season of the year. As the leaves take on their autumn hues, the surface of the nearby Tomoe River is dappled with the reds and yellows of about 4,000 Japanese maples. And from November 1 to 30, the Korankei Maple Festival takes place with events for entertainment and fun among this superb natural backdrop. During the festival period, the trees are lit up from sunset to 9:00 pm, offering a surreal scene rivaling that of the daytime beauty.
Korankei Gorge is one of Aichi Prefecture's go-to spots to enjoy the beauty of autumn leaves, but also serves as a treasure trove of alpine wild flowers. Late March to early April particularly proves this with the face of Mt. Iimori's carpeted in a light purple as countless dogtooth violets come into bloom. These spring ephemerals too draw in many each year with their quaint, transient beauty.
