Nagoya City Art Museum, Pretty as a Picture

The Nagoya City Art Museum is a work of art in itself, having been designed by noted architect, Kurokawa Kishu, and surrounded by colorful, fascinating art objects. Situated on the north western corner of Shirakawa Park, a quiet space in bustling central Nagoya City’s south western section, is the Nagoya City Art Museum. Established in 1988 with a total floor space of over 7,230 square meters, it provides a special place and plenty of time (The art museum is open 9:30am-5pm weekdays, and until 8pm Fridays!) to view over 1,200 works on display as part of the permanent collection.

Encounter the works of Japanese and international artists, divided into four distinct categories, including Ecole de Paris, Mexican Renaissance, Contemporary Art and Local Artists.
Nagoya native, Surrealist Yamamoto Kansuke is well represented, along with works by Marc Chagall, Frida Kahlo, Amedeo Modigliani, Maurice Utrillo and other luminaries are also on display. Regular special exhibits continue to draw huge crowds.

Artworks displayed in the Permanent Collection galleries are rotated three times a year, providing a new experience on every visit. There are three Permanent Collection Galleries in the basement another two on the Ground and Second floors. The Nagoya City Art Museum is serviced by a coffee shop, and a museum shop, a library, smaller exhibition halls and an auditorium hosting regular art related events, lectures and conferences. Relax in the beautiful sculptured gardens or in the fascinating building itself. The Art Museum is as pretty as a picture.
