History & Culture

Aichi Prefecture used to be called Owari and Mikawa, and is a stage on which many feudal warlords, figures like Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu, have played major roles. So many historic places related to warlords, like Nagoya Castle, built by Ieyasu, Toyokuni Shrine, dedicated to Hideyoshi, and Okehazama, which became the field for a battle, remain in the region, and evidence of the lives of warlords can be felt everywhere.

The "kaidos," highways along which people and goods would come and go, are also places where history still breathes.   Many kaidos and post towns in Aichi Prefecture are well preserved, like Miya-shuku near Atsuta Shrine, Akasaka-shuku with its famous avenue of pine trees, and Narumi-shuku and Arimatsu-shuku, famous for Arimatsu-shibori tie-dyeing, and you can really feel the atmosphere of olden times.
