Tahara-City Cape Irago

At the tip of the 50-km-long, average 6-km-wide Atsumi Peninsula is Cape Irago. The northern side of the peninsula faces the calmer, sheltered waters of Mikawa Bay, offering clean waters and good swimming conditions. The southern side faces the Pacific Ocean, meaning bigger sandy beaches with rolling dunes, and the stronger waves preferred by surfers. A certified "Lover's Sanctuary", this amazing place is pinpointed by several sightseeing attractions, offering plenty to do and see. Very popular with couples and nature lovers.
Besides the conventional land routes by train and bus, access to Cape Irago may be achieved by fast boat departing from Kowa Port in the Chita Peninsula, from Himakajima and Shinojima Islands, and even ferry from the city of Toba in Mie Prefecture, which adds to the value of the sightseeing experience in visiting it!

Sand, sun, sea, surf and love on Atsumi Peninsula

Cape Irago

Aichi Prefecture is said to look like a southward-facing crab, with the Chita Peninsula as the left pincer and the Atsumi Peninsula on the right, enclosing Mikawa Bay. Most of Atsumi Peninsula is part of the Mikawa Bay Quasi National Park, with some of the most beautiful coastlines and ocean views in Aichi. It is also noted for its temperate climate, due to the warm Kuroshio Current just offshore, making it a popular summer retreat. Fascinating rock formations along the tip of the peninsula add to the breathtaking beauty of the area.
The city of Tahara represents almost the entire municipal area of the peninsula, being an area with a diverse natural environment, rich in history, culture and touristic attractions.
The city has a fine balance of industries such as agriculture, fishing, manufacturing and commerce, and in particular, has evolved into a thriving industrial city famous for some of the country's leading agriculture and manufacturing industries.

Cape Irago

In 2006, the city proudly held the country's number one position in terms of gross agricultural output and is engaged in highly profitable areas centering around ornamental plants such as chrysanthemums and roses, vegetables such as cabbage and broccoli, and meat such as beef and pork.
The city is renowned throughout Japan for its manufacturing prowess, particularly in the transportation equipment manufacturing industry, and in 2008, was the third largest manufacturer in terms of the value of shipped manufactured products in Aichi prefecture, the nation's number one producer.
And in terms of tourism, Tahara has been blessed with a wealth of charms such as oceans and mountains that highlight the natural beauty of the peninsula, with scenic spots such as Cape Irago, Mt. Zao and Pacific Long Beach being particularly popular among the many visitors to the city.

Atsumi attractions

From January to March, the Atsumi Peninsula turns bright yellow as fields of mustard plants blossom. The cape, southwest of Toyohashi is also a well-known hawk migration spot during late September and early October, with various buzzards, hawks, and falcons using the cape as a migration point.
